Humor in Poetry
The speaker for our September meeting will be Dr. Glenn Cassidy. His topic will be Humor in Poetry.
The meeting will be Sunday, September 22, 2024. We will gather at 7 pm.
Dr. Cassidy will focus on humor in poetry, and the ways that humor can be used to comment on serious subjects as well as a broad range of human behavior. He will read his own poems as well as poems from other writers. His poems include such lighthearted subjects as global warming, gay pride marches, math, science, economics, fashion, and the English (and sometimes German, and French) language. He will also discuss how he uses his own poem about trust to teach classes in economics and government. He will then use that poem to open a discussion with attendees about what trust has meant to the gay community, both in contemporary society and historically.
Glenn Cassidy has taught courses in public policy at UNC Chapel Hill, Georgia Tech, SUNY Albany, and the University of Illinois at Springfield. The courses have included economics, environmental policy, public finance, public choice, and political ethics. Editors at Main Street Rag, Wild Goose Poetry Review, The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature, Red Headed Stepchild, and other journals have been entertained enough to publish more than fifty of his poems and short stories. Three of his poems have been awarded honorable mention or runner-up from the NC Poetry Society, and two of his short stories have been semi-finalists for the Brenda L. Smart Fiction Prize administered by North Carolina State University. His poetry and fiction often focus on public policy issues, science, math, human behavior, language, and wordplay.
