What is Sexuality Studies?

UNC Sexuality Studies bannerUNC Sexuality Studies

In the fall of 2004, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill established a minor in Sexuality Studies. There are now similar programs at Duke and many other leading colleges and universities. But what exactly is the field of Sexuality Studies? On February 24, Prof. John Sweet, Director of the Program in Sexuality Studies at UNC, will join us to explain what the program does, what’s new in Sexuality Studies research and teaching at UNC, and the role the program plays in enhancing the University’s intellectual life.

Professor John SweetProf. Sweet received his B.A. from Amherst College and then went to Princeton for his M.A. and doctorate. He has been on the faculty of UNC-CH since 2003 and has taught courses not just in sexuality but more generally in his primary interest, early American studies. With his background and focus on history, Dr. Sweet is the author of Bodies Politic: Colonialism, Race, and the Emergence of the American North and the co-editor of Envisioning an English Empire: Jamestown and the Making of the North Atlantic World.
