Protecting Transgender Kids from Discrimination in Health Care
The speaker at MRS for August 2024 will be Amy E. Richardson. Her topic will be “Protecting Transgender Kids from Discrimination in Health Care.”
The meeting will be on August 25, 2024. We will gather at 7 pm.
Amy Richardson is the managing partner of the Raleigh office of the law firm HWG. Her regular practice focuses on legal ethics and professional responsibility matters, white collar defense, and complex commercial litigation. But that’s not why she’s talking to us. As part of her pro bono practice, she is working with Lambda Legal and the National Health Law Program to represent several anonymous young transgender clients to challenge House Bill 808, a law passed by the General Assembly in 2023 over Gov. Cooper’s veto. The law prohibits medical professionals from providing gender-affirming medical care to transgender adolescents diagnosed with gender dysphoria. (Transgender adolescents who were already receiving necessary and appropriate care as of August 1 are allowed to continue with their course of treatment.)
Amy Richardson will talk to us about the issue of transgender health care and the backlash against it. She will tell us about the lawsuit challenging the law, Voe v Mansfield.
She has a B.A. from UNC-Chapel Hill and a law degree from Duke. She clerked for Judge N. Carleton Tilley of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of N.C.
