The Real World of Ballet in Carolina
On August 26, the Mary Renault Society will enjoy a truly unique gathering: we will get to talk with two dancers here in North Carolina.
Marcelo Martinez (left, above) was born in Paraguay and began his dance training there. He continued his training in Brazil, and at the age of 21 he joined The Washington Ballet. He came to the Carolina Ballet in July 2007, where he is now a principal dancer (many of us saw him recently as The Man of Darkness in Carmina Burana). He has also been a guest artist for Ballet Hawaii, the Greensboro Ballet, the Susan Farrell Ballet, the Arka Ballet and The Raleigh Dance Theater.
With the Asheville Ballet, Jaimon Howell has appeared in a new work, “Free Fall,” in the premiere of Capriccio Espagnol, as well as in The Nutcracker, Carmen, and An American in Paris: the Ballet. He was a guest artist in Balanchine’s Seven Deadly Sins (staged at WCU) and was also a top-40 contestant in season 8 of So You Think You Can Dance.
We’ll end with a question & answer session. It should be a pretty incredible occasion.
